This book highlights the lives of three early Black residents of Peel County between 1858 and 1948, drawing on public records and family archives. It also outlines the research process, noting discoveries, challenges, and areas for further study. Featured are Charles Kelly, a Brampton barber and celebrated singer; Emeline Shadd, one of Ontario’s first formally trained Black school teachers; and John Gilbert Bush, a railway porter who lived in present-day Mississauga. Their stories reflect the contributions and experiences of Black communities in early Peel.
